The sweet sounds of country music linger in Terry Lee Spencer's memory. He recalls riding in the backseat of his Grandpa Spencer's car and hearing songs by Hank Williams Jr., Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Billy "Crash" Craddock and Conway Twitty... but more importantly he remembers his grandfather turning up the volume and telling him to "listen to the words", sharing with Terry his love of country music and all that it stands for. Just as vivid are the childhood memories of his mother, a stay-at-home mom at the time, working around the house with the radio on... listening to the likes of Alabama, McBride & The Ride, John Anderson, Keith Whitley, Loretta Lynn, & Tammy Wynette just to name a few. You can easily hear the influences of these country legends in Terry's own music, although as a young boy he didn't realize the great significance that this early exposure to country music would have on his life.
Terry grew up in Rural Valley, a very small town in the heart of Pennsylvania. After high school (graduating class of 39 students!), he attended college with the help of some small academic and athletic scholarships. He showed outstanding skill and great promise of someday being a major league baseball player, which was his dream. During those years, however, Terry discovered his love and gift for music and songwriting. They were hard times... being a young father while attending college and also dealing with an extremely difficult family crisis. He turned to music as his outlet for frustrations, fears, confusion, and questions of all that life holds. After much soul-searching, he made the courageous decision to follow his heart and love of music, and pursue his new dream of making a career in the music business. He writes and performs songs that are heartfelt, meaningful, and reflective of his life experiences and love for his family. He performs both acoustically as well as with a full band, always engaging his audience with his soulful voice, charasmatic stage presence and gift of expressing, through his music, all of the emotion that each song holds. It has always been Terry's mission to have every person walk away from his performance knowing that what they saw and heard was from the gut. Born Terry McCausland, he has recently began performing as Terry Lee Spencer, as a tribute to his late grandfather's family, and as thanks to him for instilling the foundation for his love of country music.
Over the past few years, Terry has been fortunate to have shared the stage with many talented and outstanding country artists, such as Keith Anderson, Ashton Shepherd, Blake Shelton, Gretchen Wilson, Carolina Rain, Blaine Larsen, BONEPONY, songriter extraordinaire Rivers Rutherford, and even the great David Allan Coe. Throughout his career, he has competed in and won several country talent competitions. He recently won the 2009 Northeast Regional Final of the prestigious Colgate Country Showdown held in Marietta, Ohio. Terry will be competing in the Finals of the CCS in January 2010 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. This contest has been used as a launchpad into the music industry by many successful country artists such as Brad Paisley, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, Miranda Lambert, and Martina McBride. Terry was also a 2008 sem-finalist in NBC's Nashville Star talent competition, finishing among the top 100 of over 35,000 talented performers. He continues to grow as a songwriter, and is a member of NSAI, acknowledging the importance of comraderie and cohesiveness among peers in the music industry. Terry has just begun to reap the benefits of his honest, unwavering approach, and is looking forward with open arms to everything life's journey has to offer... Good AND Bad... He knows it's all part of a plan.
Terry's love for his two beautiful daughters, Megan and Macy, inspires him to continue on with his singing and songwriting. His belief in "following your dreams" is strongly supported by the unwavering love of his family and friends, and for this he is extremely grateful.
